Mets try to keep rolling against Padres

Jul 19, 2014 - 2:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The start of a 10-game road trip went well for the New York Mets and they will shoot for a fifth straight win Saturday in the middle portion of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Mets opened the trek with Friday's 5-4 win and Travis d'Arnaud singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

"I just tried to keep my eye on the ball and put a good swing on it," d'Arnaud said. "Fortunately, it found a gap."

D'Arnaud ended with three hits and two RBI, while Juan Lagares knocked in two runs and Curtis Granderson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Bartolo Colon started for the Mets and was reached for four runs in five innings for a no-decision. Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win and Jenrry Mejia posted his 11th save in the ninth.

The Mets have won four in a row and eight of the last nine games. They are 9-4 in July and 4-2-1 in the last seven series. New York's bullpen has thrown 14 1/3 scoreless innings over the past six games.

Mets third baseman David Wright was 0-for-4 on Friday, but the Mets are 13-5 in his last 18 starts.

New York, which will also visit Seattle and Milwaukee on the trek, hopes Dillon Gee can pitch the club to a series victory Saturday. Gee is 4-1 with a 2.56 earned run average and tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 win over Atlanta on July 9. Gee has lasted at least six innings in each of his past six starts.

The right-handed Gee is 2-0 in three road assignments and 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA in three career starts against the Padres.

San Diego has lost three straight, six of seven and eight of the last 10 games. In Friday's late-inning loss to the Mets, Joaquin Benoit was saddled with the defeat and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy gave up four runs in five innings.

Alexi Amarista had three hits and an RBI, Chase Headley drove in two runs and Chris Nelson compiled two hits, an RBI and a run scored in defeat. Headley has hit safely in 11 of 13 games since July 1.

The Padres made news off the diamond Friday, as they traded closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels in a six-player deal involving five prospects. Street had 24 saves and a 1.09 ERA in 33 appearances for the Padres this season.

"He's been a very, very good closer," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I knew prior to the game that this could happen."

Tyson Ross draws the start for the Friars Saturday and he has a 7-10 mark to go along with a 2.85 ERA. Ross has lost two straight starts and is just 1-6 in his past seven decisions. In Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Los Angeles, Ross was dealt the hard-luck loss for allowing the lone run in seven innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

The All-Star Ross is 4-5 in 10 home starts and will make his second career start against the Mets. The Padres have lost nine of Ross's last 11 starts.

New York took two of three from the Padres earlier this season.
