Ross, Padres blank Mets

Jul 20, 2014 - 3:47 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - All-Star righty Tyson Ross threw seven shutout innings and was backed by three solo homers as the San Diego Padres blanked the Mets 6-0 on Saturday to snap New York's four-game winning streak.

Snakebitten by poor run support lately, Ross (8-10) struck out six and allowed four hits and three walks to pick up only his second win in his last nine starts.

"He was in command," said Padres manager Bud Black.

Yasmani Grandal, Will Venable and Seth Smith all homered for the Padres, who snapped a three-game losing streak with just their third win in 11 games.

The Mets claimed the opener of the three-game series 5-4 on Friday night for their fourth straight win but managed just five hits in this one.

Alex Torres, Kevin Quackenbush and Blaine Boyer followed Ross to complete the shutout.

The Padres won a day after trading All-Star closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels in a six-player deal.

Dillon Gee (4-2) went five innings in his second start since coming off the disabled list and allowed four runs on five hits -- including two of the three home runs. The Mets righty struck out eight and walked zero.

Grandal drove a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center field leading off the second inning for his eighth homer of the season and two runs scored on Chase Headley's single in the third inning to give the Padres a 3-0 lead. The second run came home after left fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis threw to third base while no one was covering.

Venable teed off on a 2-0 fastball leading off the fourth inning, lining it over the right-field wall for his third homer of the season. Smith led off the sixth with a homer off Carlos Torres, also on a 2-0 pitch he drove to right for this 11th of the season and a 5-0 lead.

Ross didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning, when Friday's hero Travis d'Arnaud led off with a slow bouncer down the third-base line that Headley let go hoping it would roll foul. It hit the bag, giving the Mets their second runner after Gee, who walked in the third.

Game Notes

Headley scored San Diego's sixth run on a passed ball in the eighth inning ... The Padres scored six runs after plating just eight total in the last eight games Ross started. They lost seven of those games ... The Mets are 8-2 in their last 10.
