Padres go after series win vs. Cards

Jul 30, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Yangervis Solarte and the San Diego Padres try to secure a series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night in the middle contest of a three-game series at Petco Park.

Acquired from the New York Yankees in the deal that sent third baseman Chase Headley to the Bronx, Solarte is hitting .286 with six RBI in seven games with the Padres. His first two homers with the club have come in the last three games and he went deep in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Cardinals.

Solarte's solo shot in the seventh inning came one inning after he scored the go-ahead run on Jedd Gyorko's two-out single as San Diego snapped a three-game slide.

Tyson Ross struck out seven and allowed a run on four hits and five walks over six innings for the Padres.

"He's been so good over the past couple months, especially this month. When something like this happens with the five walks, it's a little bit exasperating because he's been so good," Padres manager Bud Black said of Ross.

Lance Lynn surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six frames for St. Louis, which has dropped five of its last seven games and sits third in the NL Central, 1 1/2 games out of first.

"I made one bad pitch tonight and it was a pitch that was up to Gyorko," Lynn said.

San Diego tries to secure the series victory behind right-hander Jesse Hahn, who takes the mound on his 25th birthday.

Hahn won his second straight start on Friday in Atlanta, scattering a run, three hits and three walks over six innings in his first outing since July 11.

"I felt good tonight," said Hahn. "I had great defense behind me and we hit the ball well."

Hahn has not allowed a home run since giving up two in his MLB debut on June 3 and he sits 6-2 with a 2.12 earned run average in eight starts.

He'll face the Cardinals for the first time and goes up against Joe Kelly, who makes his fourth start since coming off the disabled list. He is 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA in the first three.

Kelly hurled seven innings of one-run ball to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 19, but has allowed 11 runs over 7 2/3 innings in the two no-decisions. The 26-year-old righty is coming off an outing versus the Chicago Cubs on Friday in which he was charged with five runs on eight hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Kelly is 2-1 with a 3.90 ERA in six starts this season and has never before faced the Padres.

St. Louis won four of its six meetings with the Padres last season.
