Twins use late rally to overcome White Sox

Aug 3, 2014 - 5:49 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Oswaldo Arcia hit the go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning and Danny Santana added a solo homer in the ninth, as the Minnesota Twins rallied to claim an 8-6 decision over the Chicago White Sox in the second edition of a three-game series.

Trevor Plouffe finished 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Kurt Suzuki also drove in a run for the Twins, who put a three-game losing streak to rest.

"We're not a team that just gives up and folds over," said Plouffe. "Our bullpen has been solid for us all year long. Tonight we had to pick them up, and that's something that we're proud of."

Ryan Pressly (1-0) recorded the final out of the seventh with one pitch. Glen Perkins closed the door in the ninth to earn his 27th save.

Adam Eaton doubled three times among his four hits and drove in two for the White Sox, who had won two in a row, including Friday's 10-8 series opener. Alexei Ramirez added a solo homer and knocked in a pair, while Gordon Beckham hit safely twice and drove in two for the hosts.

"There's been great fight out of the team all year, I think we can all agree on that," Eaton said. "It seems like we've had two punching matches with the Twins so far. We won the first one, they won the second one. I definitely think we're in a good position to win this one."

Ronald Belisario (4-8) was charged with three runs while recording just one out in the eighth inning.

The ChiSox reliever allowed a one-out hit from Plouffe, then plunked Josh Willingham before Suzuki stepped in and delivered an RBI single which brought the visitors within 6-5. Jake Petricka was summoned, but Suzuki and pinch- runner Eduardo Nunez moved into scoring position on a groundout before coming home when Arcia doubled to left for a 7-6 game.

Casey Fien shut the door in the home half and Santana cleared the wall in right with one away in the ninth for a two-run Minnesota margin.

Perkins gave up a two-out hit to pinch-hitter Paul Konerko, but induced a game-ending fielder's choice grounder from Ramirez.

Plouffe's RBI double put the Twins on the board, then after a Willingham walk loaded the bases, Suzuki's double-play grounder brought in Brian Dozier for a 2-0 game in the top of the first.

The Twins made it 3-0 in the third as Santana hit a leadoff single, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a Plouffe double.

Alejandro De Aza kicked off the home half with a walk, Eaton doubled, and Beckham's grounder brought in Chicago's first run.

Parmelee's twin-killing plated Kennys Vargas, who kicked off the fourth with a base hit, and Minnesota led 4-1.

Ramirez began the bottom portion with his 11th homer of the season, then the Sox forged ahead with a four-run seventh.

Dayan Viciedo singled, De Aza bunted for a hit and Adrian Nieto sacrificed both runners, causing Yohan Pino's exit for Brian Duensing. He promptly gave up a two-run single to Eaton, then gave way to Jared Burton for Beckham's double to right to score Eaton. After Jose Abreu was given a free pass, Adam Dunn lined out before a Ramirez hit scored Beckham for a 6-4 game.

Pressly got the call and got a first-pitch swinging Conor Gillaspie to ground out to first.

Game Notes

Minnesota assumed a 7-6 lead in the season series, with its second win in five tries this season on Chicago's south side ... Pino started for the Twins and allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, while White Sox counterpart Scott Carroll also surrendered four runs on seven hits, but worked seven full frames ... Plouffe's four hits were a season high and marked his best output since a four-hit effort last Sept. 3 at Houston.
