Cashner returns from DL to face D-backs

Aug 23, 2014 - 1:23 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner returns from the disabled list Saturday when the San Diego Padres continue a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Cashner hasn't pitched since June 18 because of right shoulder soreness. He had been sidelined prior to that with right elbow soreness.

The 27-year-old right-hander has compiled a 2-6 record with a 2.36 ERA this season in 12 starts for the Padres. He had won 10 games last season in his first real action as a starter.

"I have had some injuries and that's unfortunate, but the biggest thing for me now is taking the ball the rest of the season and showing them I'm healthy," said Cashner, who is winless in his last eight starts.

He has a combined 3.08 ERA in 298 innings since the Padres acquired him from the Chicago Cubs for Anthony Rizzo in 2012.

Cashner has faced Arizona 10 times (6 starts) and is 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA.

Arizona will counter with lefty Vidal Nuno, who is still looking for his first win as a member of the Diamondbacks. Acquired from the New York Yankees back in early July, Nuno has gone 0-3 with the D-backs, but has pitched to a 3.72 ERA.

Nuno pitched well on Monday in Washington, but did not get a decision, as he allowed a pair of runs and struck out seven in seven innings.

Arizona has lost all eight of Nuno's starts.

In Friday's opener, Josh Collmenter carried a shutout into the ninth inning and Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-1 win.

Collmenter (9-7) had pitched to an 8.50 ERA over his previous four outings but was masterful on Friday, holding the Padres to a measly two hits over the first eight innings.

"I was able to locate...and keep the ball down in the zone," Collmenter said.

He was pulled with one out in the ninth after giving up two more hits, and a wild pitch by Matt Stites allowed San Diego's only run to score.

Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer while Jake Lamb scored a run and knocked in another to back Collmenter's strong effort.

Odrisamer Despaigne (3-5) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over as many innings for San Diego, which had dropped six of eight overall.

Arizona has won seven of its 10 matchups with the Padres this season.
