Guthrie, Royals seek sweep of Twins
Aug 28, 2014 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeremy Guthrie tries to pitch the Kansas City Royals to a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium.Guthrie has been a big part of the Royals' resurgence and enters this evening's tilt having won five of his last six starts. The veteran right- hander defeated Texas on Saturday, as he held the Rangers to a run and five hits in eight innings to run his record to 10-10, while lowering his ERA to 4.32.
He endured two rain delays to beat Minnesota on Aug. 17. Since joining the Royals in 2012, Guthrie is 5-2 against the Twins.
Meanwhile, getting the call for the Twins on Thursday will be lefty Tommy Milone, who lost to Guthrie and the Royals two starts ago and looked bad in doing so, as he was lit up for seven runs (6 earned) in just 1 1/3 innings.
Milone is still searching for his first win with the team. Acquired from Oakland, Milone has gone 0-1 in three starts and has allowed 12 runs (9 earned) in his last two trips to the hill.
The Twins scored 20 runs in his last start on Friday, but Milone couldn't last five innings to get a win and did not get a decision against Detroit, as he gave up five runs (3 earned) and 10 hits in 4 1/3 frames.
Kansas City continued to roll on Wednesday, as Billy Butler and Salvador Perez each knocked in two runs during a six-run eighth inning to carry the Royals to a 6-1 win.
Minnesota starter Phil Hughes (14-9) shut down the Royals for seven innings but imploded in the eighth.
"It's probably the best stuff I've had over this little run," said Hughes. "It just makes it disappointing to spoil a start when you have pretty good stuff."
The six-run inning made a winner out of Wade Davis (8-2), who tossed a perfect eighth. Liam Hendriks was sensational in his Kansas City debut, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts over seven innings.
"When you're facing Phil Hughes, who is having a phenomenal year, you look up there and it looks like the pitch count is going down instead of up," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "You gotta grind it out."
The victory, coupled with Detroit's loss, gave the Royals a 2 1/2-game lead over the Tigers in the AL Central.
The Royals are 11-7 versus the Twins this season.
