Red Sox eye another win at the Trop

Aug 30, 2014 - 1:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - So much for homefield advantage.

The Boston Red Sox head back to Tropicana Field on Saturday night with designs on a third straight victory there in game two of a four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The defending World Series champions have won just three of their last 17 games at their Fenway Park home, but they've won three of four on a 10-game road trip that's so far brought them to Toronto and Tampa Bay. In their last seven road games, they have six wins.

Rookie Mookie Betts was the key element in Friday's opener with a grand slam.

"I can't tell you the last time I've hit a grand slam, going back to high school and everything else," he said.

The skidding Rays have committed an error in six consecutive games and have won just three of their last 12.

They send Jake Odorizzi to the mound for a rematch of a May 31 game in which he was drilled for five runs in 3 1/3 innings of a 7-1 loss to the Red Sox. One start earlier, he tossed six innings of one-run ball in Tampa Bay's 8-5 defeat of Boston.

He was dinged for eight runs on 11 hits in a loss at Baltimore on Monday.

"Jake has been hit a little bit this year, but he hasn't been hit like that in a long while," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Boston's David Ortiz is batting .191 against the Rays this season.

The Red Sox send Allen Webster to the mound following a one-sided loss on Sunday, in which he allowed six runs and eight hits to Seattle.

In three prior starts, he was 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA.

Webster's lone meeting with the Rays came July 27 and yielded a 3-2 victory.

Tampa Bay could be without Desmond Jennings, who was scratched from Friday's opener with a sore knee. Boston could get infielder Xander Bogaerts back after a seven-day stint on the concussion list.

On Friday, Betts hit his first career grand slam to fuel an early burst of offense which sent Boston past Tampa Bay, 8-4.

Yoenis Cespedes added two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while Daniel Nava contributed three hits and drove in a run for the Red Sox, who have taken three of four since dropping eight straight.

Recalled from Triple-A prior to the contest, Anthony Ranaudo (3-0) allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over his six- inning start.

Brandon Guyer hit a two-run homer and knocked in three for the Rays, who have lost four of their last five. Kevin Kiermaier added a pair of hits, scored once and added an RBI in defeat.

Chris Archer (8-7) was torched for eight runs and 10 hits over four full frames.

Tampa Bay is 7-6 against Boston this season.
