Final
O's edge Twins
Aug 31, 2014 - 5:35 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Paredes homered and drove in two runs in his first start with the Orioles, as Baltimore took down the Minnesota Twins, 3-2, on Saturday.Paredes made his Orioles debut on Friday, when he replaced an injured Steve Pearce at third base and finished with a hit and run scored in the 9-1 rout. Pearce was unable to go on Saturday with a right abdominal strain, so Paredes got the nod.
Acquired from the Royals earlier this season and stashed in the minor leagues until this week, Paredes finished 2-for-3 and helped the O's to their fifth win in six games. Chris Davis scored and drove in the other run for the home team.
Both starters put up nearly identical lines, though neither factored in the final decision. Kyle Gibson of the Twins and Baltimore's Chris Tillman each gave up a run with six strikeouts and three walks, while Tillman allowed six hits in five innings and Gibson yielded four hits over five.
"We have a lot of baseball left," said Tillman. "That's the way I look at it. We gotta keep going. We got a long way to go."
Twins reliever Jared Burton (2-3) took the loss.
A leadoff walk to Davis in the fourth inning came back to bite Gibson, as J.J. Hardy followed with a single and Paredes made it 1-0 with a ground-rule double to left-center. Gibson avoided the big inning though, stranding two runners by retiring three straight.
"That's a tough lineup to face," said Gibson. "They never give you a hitter off."
The lead quickly disappeared, with Minnesota pushing a run across a half inning later. Oswaldo Arcia came up with runners on the corners and one out and lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating Joe Mauer.
Baltimore regained the lead in the home sixth on Paredes' two-out solo home run to left-center, but again the Twins tied the score their next time up.
Brian Dozier hit a leadoff single and moved to second when Andrew Miller (5-5), who replaced Tommy Hunter after the hit, had a wild pitch. Mauer's RBI single tied it before Miller struck out the side.
Davis gave the Orioles a final lead in the seventh, when his sac fly to center scored Adam Jones. Jones was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Zach Britton struck out two during a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 30th save.
Game Notes
Tillman did not lose in August, finishing 4-0 in six starts ... Tillman has never beaten the Twins ... During the game, the Orioles acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitchers Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar ... Minnesota went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11, while the O's finished 1-for-9 with RISP and left 10 on base.
