Tillman, Orioles resume series with Twins
Aug 30, 2014 - 1:04 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Tillman tries to win his fifth straight decision on Saturday when the Baltimore Orioles continue a four-game series with the Minnesota Twins at Camden Yards.Tillman was terrific on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he gave up one unearned run and three hits over seven innings to improve to 11-5 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 3.41.
He's 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA in five starts this month.
The 26-year-old right-hander has never beaten the Twins and is 0-3 against them with a 6.06 ERA in four starts.
Minnesota, meanwhile, will counter with righty Kyle Gibson, who was awful in a loss to Detroit on Sunday. The Tigers ripped Gibson for five runs and eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings, dropping him to 11-10 on the year to go along with a 4.31 ERA.
Gibson has now given up five earned runs in three of his past four starts for a 6.35 ERA over that span.
"It's one of those starts where six or seven innings and three runs would've been good, given the lack of fastball command I had," said Gibson, who has never faced the Orioles. "So I think the more I pitch that's the consistency I'm looking for."
On Friday, Chris Davis hit a grand slam, Delmon Young added a two-run homer and Baltimore coasted to a 9-1 win.
Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (7-7) got the win after holding the Twins to four hits and a run in seven innings.
The AL East-leading Orioles won for the fourth time in five tries, but had one piece of bad news.
Red-hot first baseman Steve Pearce left the game after three innings with what the team said was a right abdominal strain. Pearce entered the game on a tear with five home runs and a .333 average since Aug. 17.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Pearce would have an MRI on Saturday.
"He felt it a couple days ago. It was fine last night," Showalter said. "I didn't like some of the feedback I was getting from him. I'm not going to take a chance on it."
Trevor Plouffe hit a solo homer for the Twins, who have lost five of six.
Twins righty Trevor May (0-4) remained winless in his first four major-league starts after giving up eight runs in just 4 2/3 innings.
Minnesota took two of three from the O's earlier in the year.
