Dodgers shoot for series win over Padres

Sep 9, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Another Clayton Kershaw start, another win for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now it's time for the NL West leaders to stay on track in Tuesday's middle portion of a three-game series versus the San Diego Padres.

Kershaw became the first 18-game winner in the major leagues and lowered his MLB-best ERA to 1.67 by allowing three runs -- one earned -- and three hits in eight innings of Monday's 9-4 win.

The left-hander struck out eight and walked two batters. He has now gone 15-1 over his last 16 decisions and improved to 10-1 against teams in the National League West this season.

"It was a good night for us," said Kershaw. "We got a lot of runs early. We were consistently putting runners in scoring position."

Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe both homered and Hanley Ramirez finished 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Matt Kemp is riding a 14-game hitting streak and Crawford had three hits and drove in three for Los Angeles, winners in four straight. LA is 5-2 on a nine-game homestand.

The Dodgers pushed their lead to 3 1/2 games over San Francisco in the NL West, as the Giants were idle Monday and will start a three-game series versus Arizona this evening.

Roberto Hernandez is 2-2 with a 4.61 earned run average in five starts with Los Angeles since coming over in a trade with Philadelphia and gets the nod Tuesday. Hernandez was lit up for four homers and five runs over 4 1/3 innings of a 6-4 loss to Washington last Monday.

Hernandez has allowed three or more runs (11 total) in each of his last three starts and has made two career starts against the Padres, going 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA. In a 4-1 loss to San Diego on Aug. 20, Hernandez lasted five innings and permitted four runs, three of which were earned.

The Padres have lost six in a row and are winless (0-4) on nine-game trip.

In Monday's loss at Dodger Stadium, Kershaw outdueled Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne and the rookie gave up seven runs -- six earned -- in 4 1/3 innings.

"My location wasn't there," said Despaigne. "With the kind of offense the Dodgers have, you can't get behind in counts. This was my second time facing Clayton. I like the challenge."

Yasmani Grandal homered for San Diego, which fell to 26-46 on the road.

Andrew Cashner hasn't won since April 16 versus Colorado and is 0-6 with a 2.86 earned run average in his previous 11 starts. Cashner gets the nod Tuesday for the Friars and was saddled with the loss in last Wednesday's 6-1 setback to Arizona, charged with four runs -- two earned -- in seven innings.

The Padres are 5-3 in Cashner's last eight starts and the right-hander is 2-7 with a 2.39 ERA this season. He is winless (0-2) in 16 career games (5 starts) with a 1.37 ERA against Los Angeles.

Cashner has an 0-4 record in six road assignments this season.

LA is 11-6 against San Diego this season with a 6-2 mark as the host.
