Diamondbacks turn to Anderson to stop slide

Sep 13, 2014 - 1:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Anderson hopes to snap Arizona's longest losing streak of the season on Saturday night as the Diamondbacks continue a three- game series with the San Diego Padres.

Having lost seven in a row, the Diamondbacks turn to their rookie hurler who makes his 20th start of the year and is 8-6 with a 3.71 earned run average.

The 26-year-old righty did not factor into the outcome of his last start, a 5-2 loss versus the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings. Anderson also struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Anderson has split two starts versus the Padres, taking a 7-4 loss at home on Aug. 24 after yielding four earned runs and walking four over five innings.

Tyson Ross aims to beat the Diamondbacks for the second time in three starts as he goes tonight for the Padres.

Ross held Arizona to a run and fanned eight over six innings on Sept. 1 to win his second straight start overall, but then suffered a 6-0 defeat versus Colorado on Sunday.

The righty took the loss and had a club-record string of 14 straight quality starts come to an end as he allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. All three runs he allowed came on a second-inning homer.

"One big swing on a slider that was over the plate," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Very lengthy second inning, but (Ross) hung in there and got us into the sixth."

Ross saw his season record evened at 13-13 with a 2.66 ERA and he is 2-2 lifetime against Arizona with a 2.44 ERA in eight games, including seven starts.

The Padres extended the D-backs' skid with a 6-5 win last night. Rene Rivera homered as he was one of six San Diego hitters to drive in a run.

Eric Stults pitched six innings and was charged with five runs -- two earned -- in San Diego's second victory in nine games.

"We defended well and got some big hits, a lot of contributions from a lot of guys. It was a good team win," Black said.

A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBI for the Diamondbacks.

Vidal Nuno surrendered eight hits and six runs over five frames to remain winless in an Arizona uniform following his trade from the New York Yankees on July 6.

"Nuno has been throwing the ball great for us, but tonight he didn't have his good stuff," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.

Arizona is 10-7 against San Diego this season.
