Royals cruise past Twins
Apr 21, 2015 - 5:56 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kendrys Morales and Paulo Orlando each knocked in two runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 in the opener of a three-game series.Salvador Perez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who improved to 10-3 on the young season. Edinson Volquez (2-1) allowed one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one over seven innings.
"We felt last year was a big year for him. He really turned the corner with his mechanics on some things," Royals manager Ned Yost said of Volquez.
Kyle Gibson (1-2) got the start for Minnesota and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on four hits over five-plus innings. The right-hander, who also issued four walks, entered Monday's game unbeaten in four starts against the Royals.
"He was struggling with his feel for off-speed pitches," Twins manager Paul Molitor said of Gibson.
The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the second. Brian Dozier walked, moved to second on Trevor Plouffe's single and scored when Eduardo Escobar reached on first baseman Eric Hosmer's throwing error. Oswaldo Arcia grounded into a fielder's choice and Kurt Suzuki grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Royals, who left the bases loaded in the second, tied things up in the third. Alcides Escobar led off with a double, advanced to third on Mike Moustakas' groundout and raced home on a wild pitch.
Kansas City tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Moustakas reached base when Arcia dropped a routine fly ball in left. Eric Hosmer followed with a walk and Morales hit an RBI double to left. Blaine Boyer took the hill for Gibson and immediatley threw a wild pitch, which scored Hosmer. Perez's sacrifice fly made it 4-1.
The Royals scored three more runs off Caleb Thielbar in the eighth. Moustakas doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and raced home on Morales' single to right-center field. Perez singled before Alex Gordon struck out swinging. Tim Stauffer came in from the bullpen and immediatley gave up a two-run triple to Orlando.
