Padres, Diamondbacks continue desert series
May 9, 2015 - 12:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will resume their four-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday at Chase Field. The Padres lost the opener of this series by an 11-0 score on Thursday, but bounced back with Friday's 6-5 victory.
Will Venable's RBI single scored Justin Upton in the top of the seventh and proved to be the difference for the Padres, who have won five of eight games and are 2-3 on a nine-game road trip.
Wil Myers had four hits, including a home run, and Venable went deep as part of a three-hit night.
Padres starting pitcher James Shields improved to 4-0 even though he was touched for five runs in six innings.
"His style is to pitch aggressive and attack," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He doesn't back down, he doesn't scare off."
San Diego closer Craig Kimbrel was the third relief pitcher used and nailed down his ninth save.
The Padres will visit Seattle for two games on this trip.
The Friars have lost Tyson Ross's last four appearances and the right-hander gets the nod Saturday. Ross dropped his third straight start in Monday's 2-0 loss at San Francisco and pitched well, allowing two runs in seven innings.
Ross is 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in nine career games (8 starts) against the Diamondbacks. He is 0-2 in four road starts this season.
Arizona had its three-game winning streak stopped on Friday and Enrique Burgos permitted the go-ahead run in the seventh to suffer the loss. Jeremy Hellickson got the start for the Diamondbacks and gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings.
"He just didn't throw enough strikes early in the count," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Hellickson. "I thought we battled back well."
Four home runs by A.J. Pollock, Paul Goldschmidt, David Peralta and Chris Owings weren't enough to power the D-backs.
The D-backs are slated to host Washington for three games on their homestand.
Chase Anderson will handle pitching duties Saturday for Arizona and has an 0-1 mark with a 3.38 ERA in five starts. Anderson did not record a decision in a 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday and threw six shutout innings of two-hit ball. He struck out seven and walked one.
Anderson was roughed up the previous time out versus Colorado on April 27 and surrendered five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He faced the Padres on April 15 at Petco Park and did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 loss, charged with two runs in six innings.
In four career starts against San Diego, the righty is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA.
San Diego took two of three games from the Diamondbacks in mid-April.
