Brewers try to grab series win over White Sox
May 12, 2015 - 2:23 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the more consistent teams in baseball this month and look to extend their win streak to a season-high four straight games Tuesday versus the Chicago White Sox.The Brewers are 7-4 in May and posted their third straight victory with Monday's 10-7 victory over the White Sox in the opener of a three-game set.
Milwaukee scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 7-7 tie, as Elian Herrera hit a solo home run and Khris Davis added a pinch-hit two-run shot. Francisco Rodriguez received a double-play ball in the ninth to close the game out for his seventh save.
"We battled," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "You have to find different ways to win."
Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer during a three-run first inning and starting pitcher Wily Peralta allowed two runs in six innings of work.
Milwaukee is 5-3 on a 10-game homestand and shoots for a series win Tuesday with Mike Fiers on the mound. Fiers is just 1-4 in six starts with a 5.46 earned run average and struggled in his previous outing on Thursday, allowing five runs in five innings of a 14-4 loss to Los Angeles.
Fiers walked a season-high five batters and struck out eight. He has 26 K's over his past three starts and is 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA in four trips to the Miller Park mound this season. He has faced the White Sox once before and threw 7 1/3 shutout innings.
The White Sox opened their six-game road trip on a down note and starter Jeff Samardzija struggled through six innings, charged with seven runs (5 earned) and eight hits with six K's and a walk. The right-hander was back after serving a five-game suspension.
"You want to play clean games from beginning to end," Samardzija said. "We definitely need to not make this hard on ourselves."
Zach Duke surrendered the home runs in the eighth inning to take the loss.
Geovany Soto hit a two-run homer, Adam Eaton went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Jose Abreu recorded three hits and two RBI for Chicago, which rallied from a 6-0 hole and had won two straight and four of six games.
Chicago will welcome back left-hander Chris Sale Tuesday and he served a five- game penalty for his involvement in a brawl with Kansas City on April 23. It was the same game Samardzija was punished for.
Sale has been rough up in his last two starts and yielded five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-6 win over Detroit. He did not record a decision and has given up 13 earned runs over his previous two starts. Sale is 2-1 with a 5.93 ERA in five starts and threw eight scoreless innings in his only outing against the Brewers.
The White Sox will also visit Oakland on this trip and won two of three matchups with the Brewers back in 2012 in the Windy City. The White Sox have won 10 of the last 13 games in this series.
