Gray carries unblemished mark into finale with Red Sox
May 13, 2015 - 1:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Sonny Gray aims to stay unbeaten Wednesday when the Oakland Athletics close out a three-game series versus the Boston Red Sox.Gray is 4-0 with a 1.65 earned run average in seven starts and did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 loss at Seattle on Friday, as he held the Mariners to a run and six hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. He has fanned 19 batters in his last two starts.
The right-handed Gray is 2-0 in three starts at home and faced Boston once before, tossing six innings of two-run ball.
Oakland goes for a series win after ending a six-game slide with Tuesday's 9-2 victory. Josh Reddick went 4-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored, while Stephen Vogt and Marcus Semien also went deep.
Drew Pomeranz, making his first career start against the Red Sox, allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings of work.
"He threw strikes," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Pomeranz. "We needed him to go seven innings tonight. It's usually a good recipe when your starter goes deep into games and you play good defense."
Red Sox starter Justin Masterson was charged with six runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.
"Clearly, he's not right," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Masterson. "Whether that's physical, whether that's delivery-wise, the ball not coming out of his hand as he's shown for the better part of this year. We've got to gather some information overnight. We've got to check on him when he comes in in the morning, go through a full workup and just kind of get a better assessment of where things are."
Mike Napoli and Blake Swihart each had an RBI for Boston, which had won two straight.
Wade Miley's first season with Boston isn't going as planned and he'll try to find some success Wednesday. Miley is 1-4 with a 6.91 earned run average through six starts and is mired in a personal three-game slide. The losing ways remained intact with Friday's 7-0 loss at Toronto, as Miley allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings.
Miley is 1-2 in four road starts and has never faced Oakland.
The A's went 4-3 against the Red Sox in 2014.
