Marcum makes first start since 2013 versus ChiSox
May 20, 2015 - 2:16 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Shaun Marcum will make his first major league start since 2013 on Wednesday night as the Cleveland Indians continue a four-game set with the Chicago White Sox.Marcum will be recalled from Triple-A to make a spot start and did not pitch in the majors in 2014 as he recovered from shoulder surgery. He was able to pitch in nine minor league games last year, with two starts.
Marcum has appeared in one game with the Indians this season, a five-inning relief outing on April 12 in which he allowed a run over five innings. He is 4-0 with a 1.36 earned run average with Triple-A Columbus this season.
"He's worked hard for this opportunity," Indians manager Terry Francona told his club's website. "He pitched well in the spring and we told him we'd like for him to pitch more. To his credit, he went down to Triple-A and picked up right where he left off."
The right-handed Marcum. whose last major league start came on July 6, 2013 with the New York Mets, is unbeaten in his career versus the White Sox, going 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA over six starts.
Left-hander Carlos Rodon will look to iron out some control issues tonight for the White Sox against the team he made his major league debut against.
Rodon made his second career start on Friday in Oakland and did not factor into a 7-6 win. The 22-year-old gave up five runs, though, on five hits and six walks over four-plus innings. He had walked four over six innings of two- run ball to beat Cincinnati a start earlier.
Rodon is 1-0 with a 4.96 ERA in five career appearances. He made his debut on April 21 versus the Indians in a 6-2 loss and allowed a pair of runs on three hits and three walks over 2 1/3 relief innings.
The Indians used a strong showing from starter Trevor Bauer to snap a two-game losing streak with last night's 3-1 win over the White Sox in the second contest of this series.
Bauer struck out seven and allowed a run on four hits and three walks. Brandon Moss smacked a solo homer in the triumph.
"I'll tell you what: (Bauer) was good," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "He had a real good breaking ball and in this cold weather, I thought that was something. He made them respect all his pitches and he competed."
Cody Allen tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his seventh save of the season.
Jose Quintana surrendered two runs on eight hits and four walks over seven frames for Chicago, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.
"(Quintana) was great, (Bauer) was tough as well," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "They just scratched across a couple more than we did.
"So good pitching, you're going to run into this where you're going to have to scratch and get something out of it."
The Indians have won seven of their past 11 against the White Sox, but did lose two of three in Chicago from April 20-22.
