Holliday, Cardinals resume set with D-backs
May 26, 2015 - 2:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Holliday looks to match a franchise record on Tuesday evening when the St. Louis Cardinals try to secure a series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Holliday went 2-for-5 in Monday's opener of this three-game set and has reached base safely in all 41 of his games this season. That is one shy of Albert Pujols' club mark to open a season set in 2008.
Holliday is hitting .317 on the year with three homers and 23 RBI. He has reached base in 43 straight contests dating back to last season.
The Cardinals picked up a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Monday thanks to Jhonny Peralta's walk-off solo homer. His game-winning shot came after St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the frame.
"He's just a pro," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Peralta. "The game looks easy to him."
Matt Adams and Jason Heyward also drove in runs as the Cardinals won their second straight following a three-game slide.
Arizona tied the game in the eighth inning thanks to Mark Trumbo's two-run homer, but lost for only the second time in eight games.
"I think we fought really hard against a really good team," said Trumbo. "I think everyone is actually pretty pumped up about the way we battled."
Archie Bradley will face the Cardinals for the first time in his career tonight in what is his third start since coming off the disabled list.
Bradley was sidelined until May 16 after taking a liner off his head versus Colorado on April 28 and he lasted only two innings in his return start versus Philadelphia. The 22-year-old was tagged for four runs on five hits and three walks in a loss.
The right-hander lasted five innings on Thursday against Miami in a no- decision, again giving up four runs on nine hits and two walks. That outing left Bradley 2-1 on the year with a 4.00 earned run average.
Jaime Garcia will look to shake off some of the rust that showed in his season debut last Thursday and maintain his perfect career record versus the Diamondbacks.
Sidelined at the start of the season due to a shoulder issue that required surgery last July, Garcia took a 5-0 loss at the New York Mets last week. He gave up only two runs over seven innings, however, but had to work around five hits and five walks while striking out three.
"Far as how he went about his business, it looked usual to me," Matheny said about Garcia. "I thought it was a great approach from the beginning. We just needed to get some offense for him."
The 28-year-old lefty has won all three of his previous career starts against Arizona with a 2.16 earned run average, holding the Diamondbacks to four runs over 16 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals won five of six meetings with the D-backs last season.
