Reds try to grab series win over Twins

Jun 30, 2015 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds were able to climb back into the win column against the Minnesota Twins and will shoot for a series win Tuesday at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds halted a three-game slide with Monday's 11-7 win in the opener of a three-game set, as Eugenio Suarez collected three hits and three RBI, Tucker Barnhart went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in and Billy Hamilton scored three times to power the hosts.

Hamilton stole four bases and has 40 this season.

"That's fun, that's always fun," Hamilton said of his four steals. "Even though you don't get as many hits as you'd want. I came up (with) two hits and there was more out there to get ... but four stolen bases gets my confidence where I need it to be."

Every Reds position player had at least one of the club's 17 hits.

Joey Votto and Jay Bruce each knocked in two runs for the Reds, who scored nine runs by the third inning and held on for the win even though starting pitcher Mike Leake was roughed up for six runs in the fourth and seven total. Leake gave up nine hits, struck out five and recorded a no-decision.

Nate Adcock threw two scoreless innings of relief for the win, while Manny Parra did the same and Aroldis Chapman closed the door in the ninth.

Reds infielder Brandon Phillips (hands) was not in the lineup and his return is unknown. A trip to the disabled list is not expected.

Anthony DeSclafani is winless (0-1) in his last three trips to the mound and will toe the rubber for Cincinnati Tuesday. DeSclafani had won three straight starts prior to his unsuccessful stretch and did not figure into the decision of a 5-4 win at Pittsburgh on Thursday, charged with four runs, one of which was earned, in six innings.

DeSclafani, whose record stands at 5-5 in 15 starts with a 3.35 earned run average, will face Minnesota for the first time and is 2-3 in seven starts at home this season.

The Twins fell to 1-3 on a 10-game road trip and have lost six of their last nine games. Mike Pelfrey drew the start for Minnesota on Monday and was trounced to the tune of eight runs and nine hits in two innings of work.

"I got my butt kicked," Pelfrey said bluntly.

Brian Dozier belted a three-run homer during a six-run fourth inning.

Minnesota will also visit Kansas City for four games on this trek.

The Twins are unbeaten in Phil Hughes' last three starts and the right-hander gets the nod Tuesday. Hughes is 2-0 in that time and won his second straight start Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, hurling eight innings of one- run ball with five strikeouts and no walks.

Hughes leveled his record at 6-6 through 15 starts with a 4.20 earned run average. He is 6-2 in his last eight decisions and started the season with four straight losses. The righty has never faced the Reds and is only 1-4 with a 4.74 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Cincinnati and Minnesota are meeting for the first time since 2012, when the Twins took two of three matchups in the Queen City. The Twins are 10-9 all- time against the Reds.
