Cards hope to bounce back versus White Sox
Jul 1, 2015 - 11:51 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - St. Louis looks to get back into the win column on Wednesday when it wraps up a brief two-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Busch Stadium.St. Louis had a six-game winning streak stopped on Tuesday, as Tyler Flowers' solo home run in the 11th inning carried the White Sox to a 2-1 win.
Daniel Webb (1-0) retired the final two hitters in the 10th with a runner in scoring position to earn the win, and David Robertson survived a pair of two- out singles in the 11th to earn his 16th save.
Randal Grichuk went 3-for-5 and hit a homer on one of the few mistakes made by Chicago starter Chris Sale, who recorded 12 strikeouts to join Pedro Martinez as the only pitchers in MLB history to strike out 10 or more batters in eight consecutive starts.
"I don't really think about it that often," Sale said of the record. "I still have a job to do."
Getting the call for the Cardinals on Wednesday will be righty John Lackey, who is 6-4 with a 3.35 ERA. Lackey did not get a decision on Friday against Chicago, but pitched well, as he held the Cubs to a pair of runs in seven innings.
Lackey is no stranger to the White Sox, having gone 3-6 in 15 starts against them with a 3.81 ERA.
Chicago will oppose him with lefty Jose Quintana, who has lost four of his last five decisions. Quintana, though, has not received a decision in his last two starts and is 3-7 on the year with a 3.95 ERA.
Quintana beat the Cards the only other time he faced them.
St. Louis took two of three from the White Sox the last time these teams met back in 2012.
