    Boston (50-37) at NY Yankees (45-40), 7:05 p.m. EDT

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Hank Steinbrenner wanted hits, and he got plenty of them.

However, the New York Yankees hope to have some runs left in their rejuvenated bats for the opener of a three-game set against the rival Boston Red Sox on Thursday.

After the Steinbrenner called out his team's struggling offense for posting just four runs in three games, the Yankees rolled to an 18-7 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, setting a new season high in runs while avoiding a three-game series sweep.

Meanwhile, fresh off getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays this week, the Red Sox are now 3 1/2 games back in the American League East Division.

The Yankees are 2-3 against the Red Sox this season.

Andy Pettitte (9-5, 3.98 ERA) will take the mound for New York and will look to continue his recent effectiveness. In the past four starts, the lefthander is 4-0 and has surrendered just four runs in 27 innings.

Boston will counter with Jon Lester (6-3, 3.48), who is coming off a rough outing against the Houston Astros last Saturday in which he coughed up six runs and nine hits in five innings.
