Best vs. worst when Hawks host Knicks
Apr 13, 2015 - 2:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The top-seeded Atlanta Hawks are tuning up for the playoffs and will entertain the New York Knicks Monday at Philips Arena. The Hawks have the best record in the East at 60-20, but had a four-game winning streak stopped short with Sunday's 108-99 loss at Washington.
Atlanta rested three of its All-Stars -- Al Horford, Kyle Korver and Jeff Teague -- and their fourth, Paul Millsap, remained out with a shoulder injury.
Mike Scott led the way with 19 points off the bench, while John Jenkins netted 17 points in a losing effort for the Hawks, who trailed 38-22 after the first quarter and made 41 percent from the floor.
"We dug ourselves a hole," Hawks guard Shelvin Mack said. "They're a good offensive team."
The Hawks have a 35-5 home record and are unbeaten in the last five games at Philips Arena. They will visit Chicago on Wednesday.
New York is still gunning for the worst record in basketball at 16-64 and the most ping-pong balls for the lottery draft. Minnesota is also 16-64.
The Knicks prevailed their last time out in an 80-79 victory at Orlando on Saturday, as Tim Hardaway Jr. scored seven of his 13 points in the final 1:10 and Cole Aldrich had a career-high 19 points with 14 rebounds.
"A win is a win," Hardaway said. "We knew we only had three games left, including this one, and we just want to make use of all three."
Jason Smith had 13 points, seven boards and six assists for the Knicks, who snapped a six-game road losing streak and won for just the second time in the last 13 tries overall.
Orlando and New York combined for just 15 points in the second quarter, the lowest-scoring quarter in NBA history.
New York is 6-34 on the road and will close the disappointing season Wednesday versus Detroit.
The Knicks have dropped the first two meetings with the Hawks this season and are winless in three straight and four of the last five matchups between the teams.
