Nagy throws seven TD passes as Destroyers win opener

Mar 2, 2007 - 5:54 AM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Matt Nagy threw for 245 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Columbus Destroyers to a 58-56 victory over the Nashville Kats in the season opener for both teams.

Acquired in the offseason from the Georgia Force, Nagy set franchise records for completions (632), attempts (960), yards (7,268) and touchdowns (151) in 2006. He was 23-of-35 in his debut with Columbus (1-0).

The Destroyers trailed, 13-7, after the first quarter before Nagy tossed three TD passes in the second, including two to Damien Groce, for a 31-29 halftime edge.

Nagy hit Darcy Levy for a pair of third-quarter scores to widen the margin to 44-29 before Nashville (0-1) roared back with 27 points in the fourth.

Clint Stoerner threw three of his five TDs in the final period, including an 11-yard strike to Jason Shelley with 18 seconds to play. However, Nashville's onsides kick hit the wall, which awarded the ball to Columbus.

Groce caught 11 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns for the Destroyers, who defeated the Kats for the first time in franchise history.
