Nagy tosses nine TDs, Destroyers outscore Wranglers

Apr 15, 2007 - 7:03 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Matt Nagy picked the right time to set team passing records.

Nagy completed 28-of-40 passes for 326 yards and an interception and set a franchise record with nine touchdown passes as the Columbus Destroyers posted a 72-49 victory over the Austin Wranglers.

Wide receiver Damien Groce caught 12 passes for 116 yards and set a team mark with five TD catches for Columbus (3-3), which led, 31-28, at halftime before blowing the game open in the second half.

After Adrian McPherson hit Derrick Lewis with a nine-yard TD pass at the 10:18 mark of the third quarter to cut the Wranglers' deficit to 38-35, Nagy led the Destroyers on four unanswered scoring drives to give Columbus a 66-35 cushion with 9:41 left.

David Saunders caught a nine-yard TD with 7:21 left in the third, before Nagy connected three times with Groce - from 21 yards, 13 and seven - to put the game out of reach in the final quarter.

After McPherson threw two more TDs in the fourth quarter, Nagy hit Groce from 10 yards out with 1:44 left for the fifth touchdown between them, completing the scoring.

McPherson threw six TDs and was 19-of-34 for 223 yards but did have two passes picked off for Austin, which fell to 2-5.
