Smoker, Brown hook up for game-winning TD as Kats edge Rampage
Jun 24, 2007 - 6:38 AM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Jeff Smoker threw for six touchdowns, including the go-ahead toss to Maurice Brown with 36 seconds left, as the Nashville Kats posted a 57-54 victory over the Grand Rapids Rampage on Saturday night.Smoker went 17-of-31 for 247 yards and C.J. Johnson caught seven passes for 91 yards and a score for the Kats (7-9), who lost out on a playoff slot when Utah beat Los Angeles later Saturday.
Late in the fourth quarter, Smoker found Kenny Higgins for a 36-yard score to give Nashville a 49-48 edge with 1:48 remaining.
However, Chris Ryan scored his fifth rushing TD of the day, a five-yard scamper, that helped Grand Rapids (4-12) regained the lead one minute later, setting up Smoker's late heroics.
After the Rampage's on-side kick failed, Smoker took full advantage and connected with Brown 10 yards deep for the game-winning touchdown.
Adrian McPherson completed 21-of-39 passes for 243 yards and two TDs and Jerome Riley hauled in 11 catches for 130 yards for Grand Rapids.
