Destroyers slip by Storm in Arena playoffs
Jun 30, 2007 - 8:52 PM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Matt Nagy scored on a one-yard sneak with seven seconds remaining as the Columbus Destroyers edged the Tampa Bay Storm, 56-55, in a wild-card playoff game Saturday.After Nagy put his team in front, the Destroyers' victory was not secure until Tampa Bay's Seth Marler barely missed a 56-yard field-goal attempt as time expired.
Marler had missed a crucial extra point after Brett Dietz hit Hank Edwards for a 17-yard touchdown with 1:51 left, which gave the Storm a 55-49 lead.
Nagy then directed the winning seven-play, 45-yard drive. He celebrated has TD with an emphatic spike of the ball.
Nagy completed 19-of-26 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target was Damien Groce, who hauled in seven passes for 96 yards and two scores.
Columbus (7-9) will face league-leading Dallas next weekend in the divisional round.
Dietz threw for six touchdowns - four to wide receiver Lawrence Samuels - for Tampa Bay (9-7).
