Griffins sign Darren McCarty

Feb 4, 2008 - 2:55 PM GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Darren McCarty is taking another step toward a potential return to the NHL.

McCarty, a fan favorite for the Detroit Red Wings for over a decade, on Monday signed a tryout contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

McCarty played for the Red Wings from 1993-2004, helping the franchise win three Stanley Cups. He teamed with Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby in the late 1990s to form the famed "Grind Line."

Joining the Red Wings' primary minor league affiliate, McCarty had been playing this season for the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League.

McCarty failed to register a point in 32 games for the Calgary Flames last season.

Known for his toughness, McCarty has registered 126 goals and 280 points in 742 games over 13 NHL seasons.
