Lulay leads Lions to road victory over Calgary

Jul 29, 2012 - 5:08 AM
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Travis Lulay was unstoppable as he led the British Columbia Lions to a 34-8 victory over the Calgary Stampeders in a West Division clash at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.

Lulay completed 30-of-37 attempts for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Lulay kept the defense guessing by spreading the ball out to nine different receivers in the contest and also contributed 41 yards on the ground. Andrew Harris was a duel threat as he rushed for 55 yards and caught five passes for 37 yards and two touchdowns for British Columbia (3-2) as it snapped a two-game losing streak.

Akeem Foster reeled in five passes for a team-high 72 yards with a touchdown. Paul McCallum made all four of his field goal attempts in the winning effort.

Kevin Glenn completed 19-of-28 attempts for 245 yards and an interception for Calgary (2-3). Nikolas Lewis had a team-best 82 receiving yards and Rene Paredes converted both of his field goal attempts. The Stampeders were held to 29 rushing yards as they lost for the third time in four outings.

Calgary took an early lead with a scored single just under seven minutes after kickoff. McCallum put British Columbia up 3-1 with a made field goal from 39 yards out at the 1:55 mark of the first frame.

Paredes converted a 42-yard field goal attempt with 8:32 left to play in the opening half to give the Stampeders a 4-3 lead.

McCallum put the visitors back on top with a 45-yard field goal of his own. Lulay gave the Lions some momentum heading into the intermission as he completed a pass to Foster for a 17-yard major with less than a minute left. McCallum made the extra point attempt to give BC a 13-4 lead at halftime.

McCallum answered with a field goal of his own less than four minutes later to make the score 16-7 in favor of the Lions. Following a failed third down converstion by Calgary, Lulay completed a touchdown pass to Harris with just over two minutes left in the third frame which allowed the Lions to take a 23-7 lead into the final quarter.

A costly fumble by wideout Johnny Forzani on first play of the fourth quarter gave the ball right back to BC and hurt any chance of a comeback. The Lions milked the clock as they drove down the field after the turnover. Lulay completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Harris and McCallum connected on the extra point attempt to increase the visitors' lead to 30-8 with 9:02 left in regulation.
