Glenn's late touchdown gives Calgary edge over Edmonton
Sep 4, 2012 - 12:09 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn tossed a pair of touchdowns, including a go-ahead major with less than two minutes left to lift the Calgary Stampeders to a 31-30 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos in their annual Labour Day meeting on Monday afternoon at McMahon Stadium. The Eskimos grabbed a 30-25 lead after scoring two touchdowns in a 43-second span when Kerry Joseph scored on a 1-yard dive before Joe Burnett intercepted Glenn and took it back 33 yards to give Edmonton a five-point edge.
Glenn then marched his troops down the field, connecting on 4-of-5 passes, including a 7-yard touchdown strike to Larry Taylor, but the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Calgary with a 31-30 lead.
Edmonton had one final charge, as Joseph hit Matt Carter for 23 yards down to the Calgary 42, but Grant Shaw's field goal attempt missed wide left and Taylor fittingly secured the miss and returned it to the 20-yard line to secure the victory.
Glenn finished 23-of-30 passing for 273 yards, two scores and two interceptions for the Stampeders (5-4), who have won back-to-back games for the first time all season.
Nik Lewis caught seven passes for 101 yards, while Jon Cornish rushed for 71 yards and added four receptions for 23 yards and a major.
Joseph, starting in place of Steven Jyles who left last week's contest with an apparent leg injury, finished 17-of-27 for 311 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Edmonton (5-4), which dropped to 2-3 on the road this season.
The Stampeders struck first on their second drive of the game as a botched punt from Edmonton set Calgary up with great field position before Bo Levi Mitchell finished off the abbreviated drive with a 1-yard plunge.
Edmonton answered midway through the second stanza, as Joseph threw a perfect strike to Fred Stamps for a 35-yard major to knot the game at 7-7.
After an interception gave the ball back to Edmonton, Joseph connected with Hugh Charles, who broke free from a defender and scampered the distance for a 73-yard major to put the Eskimos in front.
Edmonton botched the extra-point attempt, but picked up a single on the kickoff to take a 14-7 edge.
An Edmonton single in the third pressed the lead to eight before Calgary responded when Glenn hit Cornish out of the backfield before Cornish made a man miss and scampered into the end zone to pull Calgary within 15-14.
After another Shaw single, Glenn and Cornish led Calgary down the field before Walter capped the drive with his first CFL touchdown on a 11-yard run around the right end for a 20-16 lead.
Rene Paredes added a 43-yard field goal in the fourth to extend the margin to 23-16 before a booming 85-yard single from Rob Maver made it a two-score game.
Stamps' 53-yard run set the Eskimos up in Calgary territory before two 15-yard penalties found Edmonton at the 1-yard line. Joseph's 1-yard dive followed before Burnett's interception return gave Edmonton the lead.
