Calvillo propels Montreal past the Roughriders
Oct 21, 2012 - 2:23 AM Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Anthony Calvillo produced 298 total yards and three touchdowns to propel the Montreal Alouettes to a 34-28 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in windy conditions at Mosaic Stadium.Calvillo completed 16-of-28 passes for 262 yards and a score while also rushing for a career-high two majors for Montreal (10-6). Jamel Richardson was Calvillo's favorite target as he reeled in eight catches for 161 yards. Chris Jennings picked up 60 yards on 15 carries. The Alouettes clinched first place in the East with Toronto's loss to Winnipeg on Friday.
For Saskatchewan (8-8), Darian Durant threw for 219 yards and a touchdown on 24-of-40 passing. Five different Roughriders had at least four receptions and Kory Sheets gained 45 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. The Roughriders still secured a playoff spot due to a loss by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
For only the second time this season, Saskatchewan produced a touchdown on its opening drive. Drew Willy completed a one-yard pass for a major to Graeme Bell to cap off an 11-play, 68-yard drive which lasted 6:25.
After being shutout for the entire first quarter, Montreal finally put points on the board in the second period as Sean Whyte connected on a 22-yard field goal to make it 7-3.
The Alouettes continued to generate points as Calvillo completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bo Bowling with 11:43 remaining in the first half. Whyte added three more points with a 52-yard field goal.
The Roughriders managed to take a 14-13 lead into halftime after Weston Dressler produced a 66-yard punt return.
Montreal took control and went on a 21-0 run in the second half to silence the crowd. In the third frame, Adrian McPherson scored on a two-yard touchdown run and Calvillo ran it in from 14 yards out.
Calvillo then scored on the ground for a second time in the fourth quarter as he dashed 22 yards down the left side of the field and across the goal line. Whyte's conversion gave the Alouettes a commanding 34-14 lead.
Saskatchewan refused to give up and put together a late rally. Durant completed a nine-yard toss to Dressler for a score to make it 34-21. The Roughriders narrowed the deficit to six points later in the fourth frame when Sheets dove over the trench battle into the end zone. The converted extra point by Sandro DeAngelis made it a six-point contest.
The Roughriders forced Montreal to punt the ball back for a chance to finish off the comeback. However, Durant was sacked on the final play of the game and time expired with Montreal on top.
