Lions get past Argos

Jul 5, 2013 - 5:31 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Andrew Harris carried the ball 15 times for 103 yards and a touchdown as the British Columbia Lions downed the Toronto Argonauts, 24-16, on Thursday.

Travis Lulay completed 20-of-34 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown and Nick Moore coach six passes for 107 yards. Courtney Taylor caught two ball for 13 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (1-1), who bounced back from a 44-32 loss to Calgary in Week 1.

Ricky Ray completed 28-of-39 passes for 215 yards and rushed for a touchdown and Chad Owens caught 11 passes for 111 yards for the Argonauts (1-1), who beat Hamilton 39-34 in Week 1. Toronto had won six-straight games dating back to last season.

BC began its first scoring drive at its 53-yard line. Lulay found Moore for a 43-yard catch-and-run before connecting with Taylor in the end zone for a six- yard touchdown. Lulay was flushed out of the pocket to his left then found Taylor wide open near the side line for the score.

Hugh O'Neill split the uprights from 23 yards out 34 seconds into the second quarter before nailing a 34-yarder at the 9:02 mark to put the Lions up 13-0.

Noel Prefontaine got the Argos on the board with a 42-yard field goal with 4:54 remaining in the first half.

BC had a chance to add on in the closing minutes of the second quarter, but O'Niell banged a field goal attempt off the right upright. The Lions, though, were able to contain Toronto in the end zone to pick up the single and went into the break up 14-3.

O'Niell's 24-yarder with 5:17 left in the third pushed BC's lead to 17-3.

Jalil Carter picked of Lulay and returned it to the Lions' 20, but the Argos were unable to cash in on the opportunity and were forced to settle for a 12- yard field goal.

Prefontaine's 37-yard boot with 12:13 left pulled Toronto within 17-9.

Harris' four-yard touchdown plunge with just under 4 1/2 minutes put the Lions up 24-9, but Ray ran one in from eight yards out to make it 24-16.

Toronto, though, was unable to recover the onside kick attempt and BC held on for the win.

The Lions led the series with Toronto by a 52-31-2 count and has taken the last six meetings with the Argos ... BC running back Shawn Gore left the game in the first quarter with a concussion ... Emmanuel Arceneaux had three rushes for 40 yards and caught two passes for 50 yards for BC ... Harris also had six catches for 49 yards ... Chad Kackert led the Argos with eight rushes for 20 yards ... BC will visit Edmonton and Toronto will host Saskatchewan next week.
