Milo's last-second field goal lifts Roughriders over Alouettes
Aug 18, 2013 - 6:16 AM Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Chris Milo connected on a 36-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 24-21 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday.Darian Durant completed 18-of-32 pass attempts for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Saskatchewan (6-1), which bounced back from its first loss of the season. Chris Getzlaf hauled in five passes for 95 yards and Taj Smith had four catches for 84 yards and a touchdown while Kory Sheets rushed for a team-high 74 yards.
Saskatchewan receiver Rob Bagg left the game before halftime after injuring his left knee. Bagg missed time last season due to surgery on the ACL of the same knee.
Montreal (2-5) lost quarterback Anthony Calvillo early in the contest when he sustained an injury to his head after taking a hit from Saskatchewan defensive end Ricky Foley. Josh Neiswander took over for Calvillo and threw for 147 yards and a pair of interceptions while completing 12-of-30 pass attempts. S.J. Green brought in seven passes for a game-high 146 yards. Sean Whyte hit 4-of-5 field goal attempts in the contest for the Alouettes.
Calvillo's injury was just one of a number Montreal would endure in the contest. Offensive tackle Josh Bourke left the game with a right knee injury and receiver Brandon London left the game prior to halftime after a hit from Tyron Brackenridge. Linebacker Kyries Hebert also left the game after taking a knee to the head during a punt.
The Alouettes took the first lead of the game when Whyte made a 15-yard field goal early in the first quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Durant led the Roughriders down the field and connected with Weston Dressler for a 21-yard touchdown pass to give Saskatchewan a 7-3 advantage.
The score remained at 7-3 until Whyte missed a 51-yard field goal attempt on the second play of the second quarter which was then returned by Dressler for a single.
Saskatchewan would add a single of its own less than five minutes later on a 68-yard punt from Ricky Schmitt.
White pulled the Alouettes to within a point later in the period with an 11- yard field goal. Neither team managed to get any more points on the board before halftime.
Whyte kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Alouettes a 10-8 lead on their first drive of the second half.
Schmitt would add another single for Saskatchewan with a 63-yard punt to make the score 10-9.
Whyte responded with a 44-yard punt that earned the Alouettes a single and after a Saskatchewan safety, both teams added field goals early in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 14-14.
The score remained tied until Jerald Brown recovered a Durant fumble and returned the ball 54 yards for a touchdown with just 1:45 remaining.
Durant wasted no time in responding as the Roughriders tied the game once again on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Durant to Smith less than 40 seconds later.
After a three and out from the Alouettes, a poor punt set up the Roughriders at the Montreal 38-yard line. After a pair of runs from Sheets, Milo came in to kick the winning field goal.
