Ray helps Argos best Blue Bombers

Oct 25, 2013 - 5:31 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Ricky Ray threw for 505 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Toronto Argonauts to a 36-21 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday.

Ray completed 39-of-45 passes, the most completions in the CFL this season. It was also the third time in Ray's career that he eclipsed the 500-yard mark.

"This is the old Ricky Ray, we're going to need him to do this down the stretch," said Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich.

With the win, the Argonauts (11-6) clinched the top seed in the Eastern Division.

Dontrelle Inman caught four passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, Chad Owens caught 11 passes for 105 yards and Romby Bryant finished with 80 yards and a pair of touchdowns on seven receptions in the win.

The game was delayed for several minutes in the first half after Neiko Thorpe sustained a head injury. Thorpe took a blow to the head and neck area while tackling Winnipeg running back Will Ford. Thorpe remained motionless on the field before he was taken away on a stretcher.

"We don't know his status. It is tough on everyone. We took all the precautions necessary, we just hope he's going to be all right," Milanovich said.

Thorpe was taken to a local hospital for further observation.

Max Hall completed 17-of-32 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue Bombers (3-14), who were eliminated from postseason contention after losing to Toronto at home last week.

"We have intensity and focus. We played hard, but the penalties keep ticking me off big time," said Winnipeg head coach Tim Burke.

The Blue Bombers were penalized 12 times for 95 yards.

After trading punts to open the game, Toronto finally got on the board as Ray connected with Bryant for a 31-yard touchdown. One play earlier, Ray found Inman for a 31-yard gain to set up Bryant's score.

The Argos extended their lead to 10-0 as Swayze Waters nailed a 36-yard field goal with just over five minutes to go.

Hall's 5-yard touchdown pass to Wallace Miles made it 10-7 with 41 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Waters extended Toronto's lead to 13-7 with a 40-yard field goal 1:44 into the second quarter.

The Blue Bombers responded with a 47-yard Sandro DeAngelis field goal, but Bryant's second touchdown of the night, a 4-yard reception from Ray, followed by a Waters' single on the kickoff, made it 21-10.

Hall found Rory Kohlert for a 7-yard TD pass with 27 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Winnipeg deficit to 21-17 at the break.

A pair of Waters field goals from 42 and 20 yards, respectively, made it 27-10, but DeAngelis nailed an 18-yarder with one second left in the third to make it 27-10.

The Blue Bombers pulled within six points following a single off Mike Renaud's punt just over halfway through the final frame, but a safety and a 69-yard touchdown pass from Ray to Inman with less than three minutes to go sealed the win.
