Cornish and Calgary conquer Roughriders

Oct 27, 2013 - 4:07 AM Calgary, AB ( - Jon Cornish bulled his way into the end zone from three yards out with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Calgary Stampeders a thrilling 29-25 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at McMahon Stadium.

Cornish, who was helped over the goal line by a number of teammates, finished the contest with 109 yards on the ground. Quarterbacks Kevin Glenn and Drew Tate combined to throw for 301 yards and while the former did toss a TD to Anthony Parker in the second quarter, he also threw an interception and was sacked three times on the night.

With their fifth straight win and the ninth in the last 10 outings overall, the Stampeders (14-3) captured the West Division title.

Saskatchewan (11-6), which will finish second in the division standings with one more regular season game to play, watched signal caller Darian Durant convert 17-of-31 passes for 202 yards, while being sacked seven times as the team saw a three-game win streak come to an end. Running back Kory Sheets was held to just 42 yards on 11 carries in his big showdown against Cornish.

Both teams delivered on field goals in the first quarter as Chris Milo knocked through a 23-yard effort for the Riders and Rene Paredes countered for Calgary with a 16-yard conversion.

The Stamps assumed a 10-3 advantage in the second frame thanks to an 11-yard TD pass from Glenn to Parker, but then the visitors rattled off 12 straight points to take the five-point halftime lead.

The run began with a 20-yard field goal by Milo midway through the period, the kicker adding a 32-yard kick later in the stanza. Durant then called his own number down on the goal line, taking a bootleg around the right side and into the end zone, but a two-point conversion attempt failed. Nevertheless, the visitors still owned a 15-10 advantage at the break.

Calgary responded in the third quarter with a 34-yard field goal by Paredes and a one-yard TD run by Tate, but a two-point conversion attempt failed for the Stamps as well, leaving the hosts with a four-point edge.

Late in the frame the Roughriders closed the gap with a 36-yard field goal by Milo.

The Stamps built their lead back to four points in the fourth, thanks to a 42- yard field goal from Paredes, but it wasn't long before the Riders countered with a 28-yard TD pass from Durant to Smith to again assume the lead, 25-22, with just over five minutes left in regulation.

Needing seven plays to cover 80 yards in just under three minutes, the game- winning score came from Cornish, with the Calgary defense stepping up late to make an interception and seal the victory.
