Harris lifts Lions over Stampeders

Nov 2, 2013 - 6:28 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Harris tallied 102 rushing yards and a touchdown for the British Columbia Lions as they coasted to a 26-7 decision over the Calgary Stampeders in the final game of the regular season for both sides at BC Place.

Harris registered a team-high 16 carries to help send the Lions (11-7) into the postseason on a two-game winning streak. Thomas DeMarco, Travis Lulay and Buck Pierce all saw action at quarterback since British Columbia entered the contest locked into third place. The trio combined to complete 12-of-25 pass attempts for 191 yards. DeMarco led the group by finishing 5-of-12 for 96 yards. Stefan Logan added 64 rushing yards on 12 attempts while Nick Moore led British Columbia in receiving with 66 yards on four catches. The Lions will battle Saskatchewan in the playoff semifinals at Mosaic Stadium on Nov. 10 for a chance to play in the Western Conference final.

Calgary (14-4) also played three different quarterbacks as Drew Tate, Kevin Glenn and Bo Levi Mitchell took turns leading the offense. Tate was the most productive of the trio, hitting on 7-of-14 attempts for 65 yards. Jeff Fuller reeled in a game-high five receptions for 66 yards while Matt Walter paced the visitors on the ground with 39 yards on five carries. Brandon Smith anchored the defense with 10 stops. The Stampeders, who already clinched a postseason bye, have a week off before they host the victor of the Lions-Roughriders matchup.

The Stampeders opened up the scoring as Rene Paredes connected on a 46-yard field goal attempt just under six minutes after the opening kickoff. BC took the lead at the 1:42 mark of the first quarter when Harris rushed one yard for a major. Rob Maver registered a single for Calgary in the closing seconds of the opening period to send the game into the second stanza with the Lions ahead, 7-4.

Paul McCallum sent a 47-yard field goal attempt through the uprights to extend BC's lead with 8:37 remaining in the first half. Lulay added another major for the Lions late in the second frame as he rushed one yard across the goal line to give the hosts a sizeable, 17-4 lead at the intermission.

The only points of the third quarter came courtesy of a 21-yard field goal by Paredes.

The Stampeders were held scoreless for the final 15 minutes of action. BC added some insurance in the fourth quarter as McCallum converted three field goal tries from distances of 45, 17 and 23 yards away.

BC racked up 370 total yards and 24 first downs while limiting the Stampeders to only 219 yards of total offense. Calgary was penalized 11 times for 133 yards. The Lions were not penalized once in the contest.

Game Notes

Calgary lost Demonte Bolden, Marquay McDaniel and Micah Johnson in the first half to injuries ... The Lions' victory evened the season series between these clubs with each side winning two games apiece ... The Stampeders still own a 97-79-5 advantage in regular-season matchups dating back to 1954 ... Pierce made his first start for BC since Week 4 ... Lulay made his first appearance since injuring his shoulder in Week 12 against the Alouettes.
