Riders beat Lions, earn date with Stamps in West Final
Nov 11, 2013 - 4:35 AM Regina, SK (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Milo made two field goals in the final five minutes to lift the Saskatchewan Roughriders over the British Columbia Lions, 29-25, in the West Division semifinal of the 101st Grey Cup playoffs.Milo made five field goals in the game for the Roughriders, who will play Calgary in West Final.
Darian Durant completed 19-of-23 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns for the Roughriders. He also carried the ball six times for 97 yards.
"Darian stepped up to the plate when we needed him," Roughriders coach Corey Chamblin said. "We were struggling in a couple of areas and Darian just stood up and took it over."
Weston Dressler caught six passes for 43 yards and two scores for the victors.
Travis Lulay connected on 20-of-26 passes for 208 yards for the Lions. He also carried the ball five times for 60 yards.
Stefan Logan carried the ball nine times for 53 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Harris rushed for 93 yards on 10 carries.
Milo missed a 38-yard field goal on Saskatchewan's second possession of the game. He redeemed himself with a 40-yard field goal to put the Roughriders up 3-0.
After Logan scored from 14 yards out to put British Columbia in front, Milo made a 29-yard field goal.
Logan responded with a 2-yard TD run to make it 14-6 British Columbia.
On the ensuing Saskatchewan possession, Durant dumped the ball off to Kory Sheets on a screen pass that turned into a 61-yard gain. Dressler's 4-yard TD catch cut the gap to 14-13.
Paul McCallum and Milo traded field goals before the half.
Thomas DeMarco's 1-yard rushing TD made it a 24-16 contest just five minutes into the third quarter. The Lions got a single later in the period.
Saskatchewan used a 13-point fourth quarter to come away with the victory. Durant's 35-yard run set up Dressler's 10-yard TD catch.
After getting another stop on defense, the Roughriders' offense went back to work. Sheets ripped off runs of 12 and 10 yards before Dressler made a 7-yard grab. The home team eventually settled for a 45-yard Milo field goal that made it 26-25 Saskatchewan with 4:57 to play.
The Lions had to punt with just a few minutes left. Durant used his legs to record runs of 28 and 13 yards. Milo made a 28-yard field goal with 28 seconds to go.
British Columbia couldn't pull off the miracle comeback.
Game Notes
Saskatchewan was without wide receiver Chris Getzlaf ... Linebacker Solomon Elimimian did not play for British Columbia ... It was the Roughriders' third straight win over the Lions dating back to the regular season ... Saskatchewan will play in the West Final for the first time since 2010.
