Harris catapults BC to first victory

Jul 13, 2014 - 5:16 AM Regina, SK (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Harris piled up 203 total yards and a touchdown to lead the British Columbia Lions to a 26-13 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Harris rushed the ball 18 times for 138 yards and a score while adding five receptions for 65 yards in BC's (1-2) first win of the season. Kevin Glenn completed 16-of-27 pass attempts for 170 yards for the home team.

For Saskatchewan (1-2), Darian Durant threw for 191 yards and a touchdown but completed just 15-of-34 passes and tossed an interception. Hugh Charles turned 13 carries into 86 yards, and Taj Smith reeled in seven passes for 82 yards and a major.

After BC got the scoring started on its first drive with a single, it added to its lead with 2:19 to play in the first quarter with a 15-yard field goal off the foot of Paul McCallum.

The Lions' advantage swelled to 11-0 in the waning seconds of the opening frame after Harris ripped off a 58-yard touchdown scamper, a highlight-reel run in which he cut back across the field and broke a pair of tackles.

Saskatchewan drove deep into BC territory on its ensuing drive but had to settle for an 18-yard field goal by Chris Milo to make the score 11-3 with 10:50 to play in the half.

The Roughriders had another great shot at a touchdown midway through the second half after a 37-yard reception by Smith set them up on BC's 3-yard line, but two incomplete passes later Milo chipped in a 10-yard field goal.

Saskatchewan finally found the end zone with 2:31 left in the half when Durant spun out of a would-be sack before hooking up with Smith on a five-yard score, as the home team took a 13-11 advantage.

The momentum shifted very late in the first half. Saskatchewan tried to simply run out the clock in the waning seconds, but Hugh Charles coughed up a fumble, leading to a 41-yard field goal by McCallum to give BC the lead back, 14-13, heading into halftime.

The first points of the second half came with under three minutes to play in the third quarter when the Roughriders, pinned deep in their own territory, opted to concede a safety rather than punt the ball back to BC with great field position.

The Lions extended their lead to six, 19-13, early in the fourth quarter when McCallum made good on a 30-yard field goal.

With 5:46 to play, Glenn connected with Courtney Taylor on a 20-yard scoring strike to give BC a comfortable two-score cushion.

The Roughriders' hopes were dashed on their next possession following a Durant interception.

Saskatchewan still leads the all-time series with BC, 94-84-4 ... Stefan Logan compiled 222 all-purpose yards (168 return, 47 rushing, seven receiving) ... Glenn went without an interception after throwing six in the first two games ... Adam Bighill racked up seven tackles and a sack for the Lions.
