Tate's late touchdown saves Calgary

Oct 4, 2014 - 5:30 AM Regina, SK ( - Drew Tate scored a touchdown on a one-yard quarterback keeper with 32 seconds to play, giving the Calgary Stampeders a thrilling 31-24 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Tate threw for 194 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 16-of-29 passing for Calgary (12-2), while adding two scores on the ground, including the game-winner. Maurice Price finished with 79 yards and a touchdown on six catches.

Tino Sunseri connected on an impressive 16-of-19 pass attempts for 289 yards and a touchdown for Saskatchewan (9-5).

The only scoring during a quiet first half came when Calgary recorded a safety.

There was finally an offensive score midway through the second quarter when Tate threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Price.

The Stampeders built on their lead in the third quarter with a 63-yard single from Rob Maver, a seven-yard touchdown pass from Tate to Anthony Parker and a 14-yard touchdown run by Tate.

Saskatchewan finally woke up near the end of the third quarter, putting two quick scores on the board with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Sunseri to Dan DePalma and a one-yard touchdown run from Sunseri. The Roughriders were successful with two-point conversion attempts after both scores.

In the fourth quarter a one-yard touchdown run from Jerome Messam and yet another successful two-point conversion evened the score at 24-24.

However, the Stampeders were able to avoid a total collapse thanks to Tate's game-winning score.
