Mitchell, Stampeders trounce Eskimos to reach Grey Cup

Nov 24, 2014 - 1:19 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Bo Levi Mitchell threw four touchdown passes to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 43-18 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos in Sunday's Western Division Final.

Calgary will face Hamilton in the 102nd Grey Cup next Sunday at B.C. Place in Vancouver. The Tiger-Cats dismantled Montreal, 40-24, earlier on Sunday.

Mitchell compiled 336 yards on 14-of-22 passing and Jon Cornish totaled 120 receiving yards on four catches with a touchdown. Cornish rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries for Calgary (16-3), which is making its first appearance in the Grey Cup since a 35-22 loss to Toronto in 2012.

"We were just ready for this," Mitchell said. "We just keep fighting until the end and we'll make sure we finish this thing off."

Eric Rogers had two touchdown grabs on three catches for 60 yards and Marquay McDaniel also caught a TD pass in the win.

Mike Reilly completed 20-of-33 passes for 216 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Edmonton (13-7) before departing with a foot injury in the fourth quarter.

Adarius Bowman hauled in eight Reilly passes for 111 yards and a score and Paris Jackson also caught a touchdown in defeat.

Rogers' 30-yard diving catch into the end zone made it a 36-4 contest with over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.

Edmonton answered back with its first touchdown of the day, a 3-yard catch from Jackson.

After the Stampeders punted, Nate Coehoorn hauled in a 48-yard bomb before Bowman bounced off a defender and dove into the end zone for a 16-yard score, making it a 36-18 game with three minutes to play in the third.

Matt Nichols took over for Reilly and drove the Eskimos deep into Stampeders territory, but Keon Raymond recovered Bowman's fumble to give Calgary the ball.

Mitchell pitched the ball to Cornish, who took it two yards to account for the final score with just over two minutes remaining.

Calgary needed just two plays to reach the end zone on its second possession as Cornish ran for seven yards before Mitchell aired out a 46-yard strike to McDaniel down the right side for an early lead.

After Edmonton's single midway through the opening frame, Mitchell plowed his way into the end zone from two yards out for a 14-1 score, capping a 5-play, 91-yard drive early in the second quarter.

Reilly was intercepted by Fred Bennett, which led to a Stampeders single after Rene Paredes missed a 35-yard field goal. On Calgary's ensuing drive, Cornish caught Mitchell's short shovel pass and took off for a 78-yard score for a 22-1 advantage with 8:50 remaining in the first half.

Hugh O'Neill concluded a 9-play, 44-yard Edmonton drive on a 42-yard field goal with 1:46 to play in the second, but Mitchell responded with a 19-yard dart to Rogers for a 29-4 game heading into halftime.
