Glenn, Pikula help Blue Bombers edge Argonauts
Jan 9, 2008 - 5:34 PM WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Ticker) -- The arm of Kevin Glenn and the foot of Rob Pikula led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to victory.Glenn completed 21-of-35 attempts for 299 yards as the Blue Bombers edged the Toronto Argonauts, 15-13, on Friday.
Charles Roberts rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries and Pikula kicked the game-winning field goal with seven seconds remaining for Winnipeg (5-2-1), which snapped a two-game losing streak against Toronto and continued to stay atop of the East Division.
The Blue Bombers trailed, 13-9, in the fourth after Argonauts kicker Noel Prefontaine booted a 25-yard field goal just 12 seconds into the period. However, midway through the quarter, Winnipeg gained possession and Glenn led his team on an 11-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 30-yard field goal by Pikula that cut the deficit to one.
After Toronto had the ball for only four plays before Prefontaine had to punt, Glenn missed his first pass before driving his club down the field. He made four straight completions, including two to slotback Milt Stegall, whose 19-yard reception brought the ball to the Toronto 28-yard line.
Stegall led the team with nine catches and 152 yards.
Two runs by Roberts moved the ball to the 20 before Pikula booted the winning kick.
Rocky Butler went 14-of-25 for 155 yards and a TD but was sacked five times for the Argonauts (2-6), who were outgained by 221 yards had possession for just 22 minutes, 50 seconds.
