Joseph throws three scores, leads Roughriders to win

Jan 9, 2008 - 5:52 PM REGINA, Saskatchewan (Ticker) -- Kerry Joseph threw a pair of first-half scores to help the Saskatchewan Roughriders build an early lead en route to a 33-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday.

Joseph hit Andy Fantuz and D.J. Flick for second-quarter scores and Luca Gongi kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired, as the Roughriders scored 19 unanswered points and took a 19-4 lead at halftime.

Joseph completed 26-of-40 passes for 355 yards and three scores with one interception for Saskatchewan (8-5), which beat Montreal twice in a season for the first time since 1997.

The Roughriders dominated the first half, outgaining the Alouettes, 308-130, and picked up where they left off in the second half.

Corey Holmes opened the third quarter with a 1-yard run that made the score, 26-4. After a field goal from Damon Duval cut the lead to 26-7, Holmes caught a 16-yard pass from Joseph to make it 33-7.

Montreal (6-7) scored two late touchdowns as Jarrett Payton, the son of the late Walter Payton, ran in from a yard out and Anthony Cavillo threw a 15-yard score to Kerry Watkins.

Anthony Calvillo finished 27-of-41 for 410 yards and one touchdown.

Cavillo was part of history as his 12-yard pass to Ben Cahoon in the fourth quarter helped the slotback become only the 12th player in CFL history to amass 10,000 career receiving yards.

Cahoon finished with four catches for 67 yards, bringing his career total to 10,005.
