Bishop leads Roughriders to victory in debut

Aug 31, 2008 - 11:41 PM WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Ticker) -- Michael Bishop's tenure with the Saskatchewan Roughriders got off to a rocky start, but he recovered in more than enough time to lead his new team to a victory over one of its fiercest rivals.

Bishop, acquired in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts on August 23, rushed for a go-ahead touchdown in the second quarter as the Roughriders snapped a two-game losing streak with a 19-6 triumph over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Sunday.

The former Kansas State standout who played one season with the New England Patriots before moving on to the CFL and Arena League, Bishop threw an interception on his first snap as the Roughriders' quarterback. However, the team came out of it unscathed and Bishop rebounded soon thereafter, leading consecutive scoring drives to put Saskatchewan on top.

With the game tied at 3-3 late in the first quarter, Bishop took control during a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive that gave the Roughriders (7-2) the lead for good. He completed passes of 25, 18 and 14 yards to get his team into scoring position, then scoring on a nine-yard scamper to make it 9-3.

He finished with 107 yards on 10-of-24 passing and 51 yards on 11 carries.

Winnipeg quarterback Kevin Glenn, who broke into the league with the Roughriders in 2001, completed 28-of-42 passes for 269 yards, but was intercepted twice and failed to get the Blue Bombers (2-7) into the end zone.
