Bauman's late TD lifts Tiger-Cats past Lions

Sep 19, 2010 - 5:24 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (CP) - Slotback Chris Bauman caught a touchdown pass with 1:24 remaining Saturday to give the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a 35-31 victory over the B.C. Lions.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn engineered Hamilton's fifth win in six starts by hooking up with Bauman on a 26-yard aerial.

The winning points came after Lions rookie Jerome Messam fumbled deep in his own territory as the Ticats overcame a 28-16 first-half deficit by scoring 19 final-quarter points.

Hamilton improved to 6-5 and snapped a tie with the Toronto Argonauts for second in the East Division. The Argos play host to Winnipeg on Sunday.

The Lions had been hoping to continue salvaging their season with a third straight win after a 1-7 start but slipped to 3-8.

Glenn also threw touchdown passes of seven and 51 yards to Arland Bruce III and Maurice Mann.

Kicker Sandro DeAngelis kept his club close all night with by being perfect on five field goal attempts and two converts. A try for a two-point conversion on Bauman's major failed.

B.C. quarterback Casey Printers threw a season-high three touchdown passes to Geroy Simon, Steve Black and Paris Jackson.

Paul McCallum added three field goals, two converts and a single.

The Lions led 18-13 at the half after the rookie Black, a cousin of NFL Cincinnati Bengals star Terrell Owens playing his third CFL game, hauled in a 40-yard strike from Printers.

Earlier, Simon had given the Lions an 8-3 lead by grabbing an 11-yard Printers pass over the middle to cap a penalty-aided 95-yard drive in which Black snared a 37-yard sideline pass.

The Tiger-Cats got a sharp first-half passing performance from Glenn, who gave them a 13-11 lead in the second quarter when he hooked up with Bruce in the back of the end zone.

The CFL's leading receiver scored his sixth TD of the season, but first in four games, when he beat rookie defensive back Stanley Franks and got a foot down before going out of bounds.

The drive was aided by costly pass interference penalties to Korey Banks and Ryan Phillips of the Lions.

Tad Crawford preserved the five-point first-half margin when he intercepted Glenn in the end zone after giving Hamilton a first down on the B.C. 40-yard line with a roughing penalty.

Jackson increased the B.C. lead to 28-16 in the third quarter with a leaping catch in the end zone.

However, the Ticats took advantage of the Printers turnover with a quick strike to Mann to close the gap to 28-26 early in the fourth quarter.

NOTES: Import defensive end Stevie Baggs, who tied for most quarterback sacks with 12 last season, did not play ... the former Saskatchewan star signed Thursday with Hamilton after being released by the NFL Arizona Cardinals ... the Lions were the CFL's most-penalized team on kick returns entering this week's play ... B.C. has used seven offensive line combinations this season ... Glenn threw for a career-high five TDs against the Lions five seasons ago when he played for Winnipeg.
