Argonauts edge Blue Bombers
Sep 25, 2011 - 3:40 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Noel Prefontaine's late single lifted the Toronto Argonauts over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 25-24, in an injury-filled affair at Rogers Centre. With under one minute remaining, Prefontaine missed a 38-yard field goal, but Jovon Johnson was unable to run the ball out of the end zone, giving Toronto a one-point lead.
Time ran out on Winnipeg's offense.
Toronto quarterback Steven Jyles completed 11-of-20 passes for 88 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions against his former club. Jyles, who also carried the ball eight times for 61 yards and a score, faced his former Winnipeg teammates Saturday night for the first time since being dealt to the Argonauts in March.
Cory Boyd carried the ball 12 times for 109 yards for the Argonauts (3-9), who snapped a three-game skid.
Buck Pierce connected on 7-of-13 passes for 68 yards and a pick before leaving the game with a rib injury. Alex Brink completed 10-of-13 passes for 121 yards and an interception before exiting with a shoulder injury.
Third-string quarterback Justin Goltz completed 3-of-6 passes for 36 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Bombers (8-4), who failed to build off last week's 25-23 win over Montreal.
Fred Reid carried the ball eight times for 44 yards, but he left the game with a leg injury. Carl Volny replaced Reid and rushed for 60 yards on seven carries. Volny also left with a leg injury.
Winnipeg tied the game at 24 with seven minutes to play. Goltz lofted an 18- yard pass into the end zone for Clarence Denmark, who made a great one-handed grab.
A decent punt return by Chad Owens gave Toronto great field position with time winding down. Prefontaine's single gave the Argonauts the victory.
Johnson returned a Jyles interception 27 yards for a touchdown on Toronto's first offensive play of the game.
Jyles made up for his mistake with an 18-yard TD run to make it 7-7. Prefontaine added a single late in the first quarter for a one-point lead.
Chad Rempel's first career TD catch on the second play of the second period gave Toronto a 15-7 edge.
Volny fumbled the ball into the end zone before half and Glenn January jumped on the football for a Winnipeg touchdown. The score cut the gap to 15-14 at the break.
Justin Palardy's 39-yard field goal with 3 1/2 minutes to play in the third gave the Blue Bombers a 17-15 lead.
Winnipeg fumbled on its next possession. Terrence Edwards lost control of the ball and Jeremy Unertl picked it up for the Argonauts. Unertl pitched the ball to Evan McCollough, who sprinted down the left sideline for a 60-yard score and 22-17 lead.
The Blue Bombers had a punt blocked on the first play of the fourth quarter. Winnipeg fell on the ball in the end zone to give Toronto a safety.
Winnipeg had a touchdown negated by a penalty with 10:41 to play. Owens failed to control a punt and the ball bounced into the end zone. The Blue Bombers fell on the ball for a TD, but two penalties on Winnipeg took away the score.
The Blue Bombers tied the game after picking off Jyles, who left the game with an injury. Dalton Bell played the rest of the game under center.
