Final
Alouettes narrowly edge Tiger-Cats
Oct 16, 2011 - 9:32 PM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Anthony Calvillo passed for 341 yards and two touchdowns, and Chip Cox broke up a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute to lift the Montreal Alouettes to a 27-25 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday.Calvillo, playing six days after becoming pro football's all-time leading passer, was 27-of-39 for Montreal (10-5) and threw touchdown passes to Brandon Whitaker and Kerry Watkins.
Quinton Porter's four-yard touchdown pass to Dave Stala got Hamilton (7-8) within two points with 56 seconds remaining, giving them a chance to tie the game.
But Cox, who was beaten on the left side for Stala's touchdown, deftly covered Aaron Kelly on the right side to break up Porter's throw on the conversion attempt.
Kelly, who is 6-foot-5, couldn't come down with the ball against the 5-foot-9 Cox despite what Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille called "a late-game, great throw" by Porter.
"We had the tall player there to make that play," the Ticats coach said.
Tiger-Cats starter Kevin Glenn passed for 201 yards with two interceptions and ran for a touchdown but came out of the game a couple of times. Porter, who threw for 103 yards, replaced Glenn early in the first quarter and two plays before his TD pass in the fourth.
Sean Whyte was 4-for-5 on field goal kicks for East Division-leading Montreal, including 2-of-3 in the first half. Hamilton kicker Justin Medlock was 3-of-4 in the first half and 4-for-6 in the game.
Indeed, the first half was peppered by field goals until Calvillo and Whitaker hooked up for the only touchdown, a 20-yarder in the final minutes of the second quarter to make it 14-6.
Medlock kicked a 31-yard field goal in the last seconds to get Hamilton within five points at halftime.
Calvillo threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Watkins for the only points of the third quarter, giving Montreal a 21-9 lead going into the fourth.
Medlock kicked a field goal and Whyte made two in the final quarter before Glenn's 15-yard touchdown run got the Tiger-Cats within striking distance.
"I though we did pretty good," said Calvillo. "That third quarter we came out and scored some points. But in the fourth we made some mistakes."
