Hamilton rolls past BC with big second half

Oct 23, 2011 - 3:16 AM Hamilton, ON (Sports Network) - Quinton Porter threw for a score and ran for another, leading the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to an emphatic 42-10 victory over the British Columbia Lions.

Porter threw for 116 yards while splitting time with Kevin Glenn, who also threw for 116 yards.

Justin Medlock hit a CFL season-high seven field goals for the Tiger-Cats (8-8), who outscored BC 26-0 in the second half to halt a two-game losing skid.

Travis Lulay threw for 218 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (9-7), who had won eight straight games entering the contest.

They last lost August 13 against Winnipeg.

"Winning eight in a row, you don't think that sooner or later you're gonna lose one," said Lulay. "You prepare looking for another win. But give them credit, they played a great game."

The Tiger-Cats grabbed an early 6-0 lead, as Medlock capped the team's first two drives with field goals of 19 and 44 yards, respectively.

The Lions, though, held a 7-6 lead after the first courtesy of Lulay's 25-yard touchdown pass to Geroy Simon in the waning moments of the quarter.

Medlock, who was perfect for the game, hit a 42-yarder midway through the second, but Paul McCallum responded with a 21-yarder on his only field goal attempt of the night.

In the waning moments of the half, Marc Beswick blocked McCallum's punt and Daryl Stephenson recovered the ball at the BC seven-yard-line. The Tiger-Cats moved to the goal line on a subsequent pass interference penalty and Porter plunged into the end zone for a 16-10 lead at the break.

Medlock stayed hot, hitting field goals of 48 and 47 yards to open the third quarter. Late in the quarter, Marcus Thigpen returned a McCallum punt 37 yards to the BC 22 and Porter found Bakari Grant two plays later for a 23-yard touchdown strike and a 29-10 advantage.

In the fourth, Medlock sandwiched field goals of 29 and 35 yards around Ray Mariuz's 21-yard interception return for a touchdown to cap the scoring.

"This is a kicker friendly league," said Medlock. "The offense moved the ball well and I just took it one kick at a time."

Game Notes

With the loss, the Lions fell into a tie for second place with the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL West. BC hosts Edmonton on Saturday with first place in the division on the line...Medlock is 45-for-51 in field goals this season...Simon had 42 receiving yards, passing Allen Pitts (14,891) for second-place all-time in the CFL.
