Als play beat the clock, clip Ticats on Calvillo's 40th
Aug 24, 2012 - 2:57 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Sean Whyte kicked a 37-yard field goal on the game's final play, as the Montreal Alouettes won at home over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for a 15th straight time, 31-29, Thursday night.Luca Congi hit a 47-yard field goal with 1:22 remaining, but Anthony Calvillo, who celebrated his 40th birthday Thursday, led the Als on the game-winning drive that spanned eight plays and went 45 yards.
Calvillo completed 25-of-36 passes for 329 yards with a touchdown, as the Alouettes (5-3) won their third straight game. They haven't lost at home to the Tiger-Cats since Oct. 20, 2002.
Brandon Whitaker had 19 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown, while S.J. Green tallied 10 receptions for 168 yards and a score in the victory.
Henry Burris ended 22-of-34 for 281 yards with a TD and an interception for Hamilton (3-5), which lost its third in a row. Chris Williams returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown.
Burris made a connection to Williams on the right sideline for a 27-yard gain to put Congi in position for the go-ahead kick. A touchdown drive was thwarted when John Bowman surged up the middle to sack Burris.
"We had a big play by John Bowman near the end of the game," Green said. "He also made a big defensive play earlier and we just fed off of them."
Calvillo, a three-time Most Outstanding Player Award winner, scrambled 17 yards up the middle and used the short passing game to move the ball into position for Whyte to win the game.
"Anytime you lose like that at the end, it's tough," Hamilton coach George Cortez said. "We were in a pretty good position, but they made some plays and got into good field goal position. Unfortunately, that's how it ended."
Ahead 3-1 after the first quarter, Williams darted to the left side and picked up blocks on the way to the end zone, but Calvillo connected with Green on the left side of the end zone on the ensuing possession.
Congi's 15-yard field goal moved the margin to 13-8 at halftime.
Whyte and Congi exchanged field goals early in the third before Adrian McPherson scored on a one-yard sneak up the middle for an 18-16 Montreal edge.
Congi split the uprights from 27 yards out late in the third and the Tiger- Cats increased the lead to 26-18 early in the fourth quarter on Burris' 15- yard TD connection to Avon Cobourne.
Whitaker then scored from three yards out, and after forcing a punt, Calvillo moved the Als into scoring position again. He found guard Ryan Bomben to the 3, but after being sacked by Greg Peach, Whyte booted a 17-yard field goal.
