Stampeders escape Edmonton with win
Sep 8, 2012 - 6:03 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Jon Cornish's 59-yard touchdown run was the difference as the Calgary Stampeders edged the Edmonton Eskimos, 20-18, on Friday.Cornish finished with 185 yards on 16 carries for the Stampeders, who have won three straight.
Kevin Glenn completed 19-of-30 passes for 254 yards with two interceptions and a score for Calgary (6-4).
Kerry Joseph went 27-for-35 through the air for 275 yards and a touchdown for Edmonton (5-5), which has dropped three of its last four.
Grant Shaw, who made a 22-yard kick in the game, had a potential game-winning 35-yard field goal bounce off the right post as time expired.
"It was a fight. You have got to credit both teams," Joseph said. "I'm proud of our guys and of how we fought."
Calgary received the opening kickoff and converted a 3rd-and-1 at their own 53-yard line with a Bo Levi Mitchell run up the middle before Glenn found Johnny Forzani deep down the left sideline for a 37-yard touchdown on the ninth play of the drive.
The teams traded punts from there until Romby Bryant hauled in a 50-yard bomb over the middle to set up Rene Paredes' 28-yard field goal, giving the Stampeders a 10-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Edmonton started a drive at the Calgary 45-yard line early in the second quarter after the Stampeders were forced to punt from deep inside their own territory, and the Eskimos took advantage of the favorable field position with a 22-yard field goal by Shaw.
Calgary moved its ensuing possession down to the Edmonton 14 with the help of a 33-yard defensive pass interference penalty on the Eskimos' T.J. Hill, but Chris Thompson made a leaping interception on the left side of the end zone to end the threat.
Neither team was able to cross midfield from there until Edmonton took over on offense at its own 45-yard line with 29 seconds left in the second quarter. Four plays later, the Eskimos attempted a field goal from the Calgary 35-yard line, but Matt Nichols dropped the snap.
Nichols, though, was able to recover the ball and scramble to his right before throwing a pass to Corbin Sharun at the 5-yard line and Sharun rumbled into the end zone as time expired to give the Eskimos an 11-10 lead at the break.
Marquay McDaniel had receptions of 11 and 10 yards while Cornish reeled off a 26-yard run as part of an eight-play Calgary drive late in the third quarter that moved down to the Edmonton 21, but Thompson again intercepted a Glenn pass attempt in the end zone to keep it one-point game.
However, the Stampeders were able to regain the lead on their next touch with a 13-yard Paredes field goal to cap a seven-play, 66-yard drive that stretched from the third to the fourth quarter.
Calgary later took the ball at its own 51-yard line with less than six minutes to play and Cornish reeled off a 59-yard run to the left on the first play of the drive to stretch its lead to 20-11.
The Esks answered with a seven-play, 80-yard march Fred Stamps finished off with a leaping 22-yard touchdown reception to bring Edmonton back within two.
After a Calgary punt, Marcus Henry's 31-yard grab on a 3rd-and-18 moved Edmonton to the Stamps' 35 and following two rushes for zero yards by Hugh Charles, Shaw had his field goal attempt hit directly off the right post and fall to the ground as time expired.
