Final
Strong second half leads Riders over Stamps
Jul 6, 2013 - 6:16 AM Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Kory Sheets ran for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Darian Durant threw for a pair of scores, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders topped the Calgary Stampeders, 36-21, at Mosaic Stadium.Sheets rushed 26 times for 133 yards. Durant connected on 26-of-34 passes for 258 yards with a pair of TDs for the Roughriders (2-0), who were coming off a season-opening win against Edmonton. Weston Dressler had 10 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown.
"The second half was a total team effort and it gave our guys a lot of confidence," Saskatchewan coach Corey Chamblin said.
The Stampeders (1-1), who beat British Columbia in its season-opener, were outscored 22-0, in the second half. Drew Tate finished 19-of-25 for 231 yards with a pair of scores.
"Offensively we couldn't establish anything. We only had two opportunities in the third quarter and we were two plays and out both times," Calgary head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said. "The defense, we couldn't get them off the field and when we did we had penalties to extend their drives and they ended up in scores."
The rematch of last year's West Division semifinal, which was won by the Stampeders, 36-30, was for the taking until the final quarter.
That's when Sheets gave a great second effort to score on a three-yard run, nearly two minutes into the final period. The major came after a 31-yard pass interference penalty on defensive back Jonathan Hefney. Durant's pass to Dressler was successful for the two-point conversion and a 28-21 lead.
Durant later threw 15 yards for a score to Chris Getzlaf to seal the outcome.
Marquay McDaniel ran seven yards for a TD in the first quarter for the Stampeders, while Chris Milo's 15-yard field goal was the lone score for the hosts.
Tate threw eight yards for a TD to Rob Cote on the opening play of the second quarter. Durant later connected with Dressler for a 28-yard score and to Sheets for the conversion.
Milo then booted a 36-yad field goal prior to Tate's 16-yard scoring strike to Joe West in the waning seconds of the half to yield a 21-14 Calgary edge at the break.
Milo split the uprights from 38 and 29 yards in the third quarter.
Game Notes
West had 97 yards on four catches, while Getzlaf also had 97 yards, but on eight receptions ... The Roughriders were without slotback Geroy Simon again due to a leg injury ... Saskatchewan has won just two of the last nine meetings.
