Argonauts top Lions behind Collaros' 3 TDs

Jul 31, 2013 - 3:17 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Zach Collaros threw for three touchdowns in his first CFL start and the Toronto Argonauts dominated the British Columbia Lions, 38-12, at Rogers Centre.

Collaros filled in for Ricky Ray, who sat out due to a knee injury. The University of Cincinnati product completed 21-of-25 passes for 253 yards for the Argos (3-2), who were coming off a 16-point win at Winnipeg on July 19. Curtis Steele ran for 74 yards and a pair of fourth quarter TDs for Toronto, which snapped a six-game skid to BC and beat the Lions for just the second time in the last 18 meetings.

"I played a great game. In the second half our offensive line took their will away from them," Collaros said. "We had a good six days of practice and it all worked out."

Travis Lulay connected on 20-of-29 passes for 226 yards and was picked off once for the Lions (3-2), who had won three in a row, including a 24-16 home win over the Argos on July 4. Andrew Harris gained 107 yards on 16 carries.

"When you don't make plays, you turn the ball over and you don't score in the red zone you don't win games," BC coach Mike Benevides said.

Paul McCallum kicked a 10-yard field goal for the only points of the first quarter. Noel Prefontaine missed a 41-yard try for the Argos.

Lulay was picked off by Marcus Ball late in the first quarter. The led to a Collaros 22-yard connection to Jason Barnes in the middle of the end zone early in the second for a 7-3 Toronto lead.

McCallum split the uprights from 17 yards out with nearly 8 1/2 minutes left in the half. Collaros found Zander Robinson on the right side for a 1-yard score just over four minutes later for a 14-6 advantage, which the Argos carried into halftime.

Another 17-yarder by McCallum in the third trimmed the deficit to five points, but Collaros hit John Chiles from 23 yards away later in the quarter.

McCallum's 10-yarder on the final play of the third got the Lions closer, but Prefontaine was good from 20 yards away nearly five minutes later.

Steele salted away the victory with a pair of 1-yard TD runs. The first one came after Lulay was sacked and lost a fumble.
