Price, Stampeders hold off Eskimos

Sep 3, 2013 - 1:06 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Maurice Price caught three touchdown passes and the Calgary Stampeders held off Edmonton's furious comeback to pull out a 37-34 victory in the annual Labour Day clash between the West rivals.

The Eskimos scored 27 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to pull within a field goal and were in enemy territory with time winding down before an incomplete pass on third down sealed the outcome.

Price gained most of his yards after the catch, totaling 165 on just five receptions for the Stampeders (7-2), who remained in sole possession of second place in the division.

Bo Levi Mitchell and Kevin Glenn split time under center for Calgary. Mitchell threw for 226 yards and two scores and added another major on the ground, while Glenn added 108 yards and a score through the air.

The Eskimos (1-8) have dropped seven in a row since their only win of the campaign versus Hamilton in Week 2.

Mike Reilly completed just 16-of-35 passes for 246 yards and two interceptions but threw touchdown passes to four different receivers in a six-minute span to make things interesting.

Reilly first hit Cary Koch for a 35-yard score, then found John White from 18 yards out and Matt Carter for a 33-yard strike to make it a 37-27 game. A fumble gave the Eskimos the ball back, and Reilly connected with Fred Stamps in the back of the end zone with 2:17 on the clock.

After forcing a punt, Edmonton reached the Calgary 53-yard line before Reilly's 3rd-and-3 pass to Stamps was knocked down with 20 seconds remaining.

The Eskimos' last five losses have come by a combined 15 points.

A pass interference penalty in the end zone set up Mitchell's 1-yard touchdown run on Calgary's first possession of the game.

After Rene Paredes added a 41-yard field goal, Fred Bennett picked off a Reilly pass and returned it into Edmonton territory. Two plays later, Price caught a short pass and took it in for a 33-yard major.

The Eskimos were in quick sand before Joe Burnett jolted Edmonton's anemic offense with a 78-yard punt return midway through the second quarter. Kerry Joseph capitalized on the big play with a 2-yard TD run with 4:44 left in the half, but the Stampeders took over in the third.

After Paredes connected from 14 and 24 yards out, Price pushed Calgary's lead to 30-7 with a 42-yard touchdown off a screen pass from Mitchell.

Price capped his monster game with a 66-yard score early in the fourth, which proved to be the difference.
